PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Stefan is the founder and principal of SMB Law. He has extensive experience acting in a broad range of contentious matters including high profile high risk disputes, commissions of inquiry and insolvency matters.  His practice has a particular focus on commercial and financial services industry clients.

​

Stefan is a pragmatic, delivery focused lawyer who demonstrates a real commitment to his clients.  His range of experience, network and expertise ensures that he can provide a solution to the legal problems faced by his clients.  He applies a commercial and strategic approach to litigating and protecting the rights of his clients.

He founded SMB Law after a successful career working in national and boutique law firms.  He has experience in the United Kingdom, the USA, Queensland and New South Wales.

EXPERIENCE

​

  • Acting for a senior union official in the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption, including supporting an application that the Commissioner recuse himself for apprehended bias.

  • Acting for the lead plaintiff in large and complex representative proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales against a major Australian mining company.

  • Acting for a commercial trustee of two large commercial managed investment schemes in large and extremely complex Supreme Court proceedings involving a major Australian investment bank.

  • Acting for the Administrators of a well-known child care business in public examinations of its directors and officers and other relevant individuals.

  • Acting for the main person of interest in a public inquiry conducted by the Independent Commission Against Corruption regarding alleged corruption in the recruitment practices of a major University.

  • Acting for a senior council employee in a Public Inquiry into a local council conducted under the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW).

  • Acting for a liquor licensee in criminal proceedings brought against him in relation to alleged breaches of licence conditions and sections of the Liquor Act 2007 (NSW).

  • Acting for the promoter of alternative investment products in a vigorous and wide ranging investigation conducted by the ASIC.

  • Acting for the holder of an Australian Financial Services Licence in administrative proceedings concerning the suspension and cancellation of the licence conducted by an ASIC delegate.

  • Acted for various parties in wide ranging commercial disputes in a variety of jurisdictions and industries including urgent applications to the duty judge to final contested hearings.

Crina graduated from Macquarie University in 2015 and was admitted to practice law shortly after.

 

Crina has experience in commercial litigation and insolvency matters. Crina’s experience also covers migration law and commercial law. Crina has the skills and experience to assist businesses and individuals alike with a full range of services in the areas of business, commercial and insolvency law.

Since joining SMB Law in June 2020, Armany has excelled in working across commercial litigation and insolvency matters to provide strategic and thorough legal advice to clients.

 

Armany is adept in conducting legal proceedings from commencement to a final hearing and regularly achieves successful court outcomes for clients.  Armany has conducted commercial litigation matters, ranging from Local Court matters to complex Supreme Court matters. Armany is focused on the needs of our clients and is committed to ensuring our clients achieve the best result possible.

EXPERIENCE

 

  • Acting for a large business in the Equine industry in an urgent application to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and successfully obtaining an injunction against a former employee who established a competing business and breached various contractual restraints and equitable duties.

  • Acting for a commercial lender to recover money from borrowers who were advanced money under a defective loan agreement.

  • Acting for a director in an investigation commenced by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission to consider disqualifying him from being a director for a period of up to five years.

  • Acting for a shareholder of a company who was subject to oppressive conduct by the company following a falling out with the director.

  • Acting for a large building company who was pursued under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 1999 (NSW).

  • Acting for a liquidator to recover money from a third party who received company funds at a time when the company was insolvent.

Anitta graduated from the University of Technology Sydney with a double degree in Law and Business. Anitta has a strong background in transactional law and commercial lending working with a number of mortgage lenders since her admission. Anitta works diligently to achieve our client’s best commercial and legal interests.
